Algorand has already moved 140,000 quantum-resistant transactions live on mainnet. Sei published a draft proposal last week. That gap tells you everything about who's actually building and who's still planning.

The quantum computing threat to crypto used to feel abstract, something the industry could postpone indefinitely. Now chains are scrambling to prove they've got defenses in place, and the difference between announcing plans and shipping working code has become impossible to ignore.

What Algorand Already Shipped

Algorand flipped the switch on Falcon signatures, a NIST-approved post-quantum cryptography scheme, back in November 2025. Since then the network has processed more than 140,000 quantum-resistant transactions on live mainnet. No testnet theater, no whitepaper promises, just actual network activity while most competitors are still writing press releases.

The rollout continues through 2026. Native protocol-level Falcon accounts hit Q3, with the lighter Falcon-512 variant shipping by year-end. Coverage extends beyond simple wallets into consensus layers, staking mechanisms, and multisig setups. Full protocol resilience across the board lands sometime in 2027.

Sei's Draft and the Efficiency Play

Sei introduced SIP-5 this week, which binds ML-DSA-44 keys to accounts. The approach is leaner than some alternatives floating around. Signature sizes run between 640 and 1,280 bytes depending on which variant you pick, keeping overhead tight compared to other post-quantum schemes. That matters for networks where every byte counts.

The problem isn't the technical design. It's the timing. Sei has a draft. Algorand has 140,000 confirmed transactions and a shipping schedule already nine months into execution. When quantum computers finally become practical enough to threaten current cryptography, networks that already migrated their users will have a massive advantage. Networks still debating implementation details will be scrambling.

Sei's solution may end up being smarter, leaner, or more elegant. But elegance in draft form doesn't protect anyone's assets once the threat materializes. This race isn't really about which design wins. It's about which network gets its users protected first.
