After more than a decade locked out, a user known as @cprkrn finally accessed a Bitcoin wallet holding 5 BTC, worth about $400,000. The breakthrough came around mid-May 2026, thanks to Anthropic's AI, Claude, which examined old files on the user’s computer. Instead of hacking Bitcoin’s cryptography, Claude’s strength lay in quickly combing through data to spot a hidden flaw in the recovery software.

The wallet was backed up locally in an encrypted file from December 2019. Claude discovered a critical bug in btcrecover, an open-source tool the user had relied on for years. This software had unsuccessfully cycled through 3.5 trillion password attempts, but a bug in how it combined shared keys and passwords was blocking success. Fixing this glitch allowed the correct password combination to work, finally opening the wallet after 11 years.

Why This Changes the Game

While some reports touted an eight-minute fix by Claude, official sources focus on its ability for code review and debugging rather than speed. The AI did not brute-force encryption or seed phrases but analyzed the local files and workflow. This signals a new angle in crypto security: someone with physical access to old devices could use AI to find software bugs in recovery tools, a much more plausible threat than remote hacks on hardware wallets.

Given the estimated 3 to 4 million Bitcoins believed lost forever, this breakthrough points to the potential for AI to recover assets thought permanently inaccessible. Tools like Claude could systematically identify vulnerabilities in recovery software, enabling previously locked wallets to be opened.
