The alarm bells about AI turning DeFi into an open buffet for hackers are ringing louder every quarter, yet the data so far does not support a full-blown epidemic. Security researchers tracking on-chain exploits say that while AI tools are showing up in attacker workflows, the vast majority of DeFi breaches in 2024 still traced back to the old culprits: reentrancy bugs, price oracle manipulation, and plain bad access control. Nothing exotic. Nothing that required a language model to find.

What Is Actually Happening Right Now

AI is being used at the edges of the attack cycle, mostly for automating reconnaissance and scanning codebases for low-hanging vulnerabilities at a scale no human team could match manually. That is a meaningful shift in attacker efficiency, but it is not yet producing a new category of exploit. The hacks that drained hundreds of millions from protocols last year were still human-designed, even if AI helped speed up the discovery phase.

Defenders are running the same playbook in reverse. Audit firms and on-chain monitoring services are feeding AI the same smart contract code to catch issues before deployment. For now, both sides are roughly keeping pace with each other, which explains why the feared epidemic has not materialized.

Why the Calm May Not Last

The gap between today's AI capabilities and what is plausible within 18 to 24 months is the part that worries serious researchers. Models that can reason about multi-step logic across interdependent protocols, flash loan sequences spanning three or four platforms simultaneously, are already being tested in controlled environments. When those capabilities become accessible outside research labs, the cost of designing a novel cross-protocol exploit drops dramatically.

Smaller protocols are the obvious first target. A project with $20 million TVL and a two-person dev team is not going to out-resource an AI-assisted attacker running thousands of simulated attack paths overnight. The economics tip hard against them.

So the current moment looks less like safety and more like a short pause before a harder problem arrives. The infrastructure for AI-assisted defense exists, but it is concentrated in well-funded audit shops and a handful of on-chain monitoring services. Most of DeFi sits outside that coverage.
